Anxiety counselling in South London
What Anxiety Can Feel Like

Anxiety is a normal emotion to feel in response to danger or uncertain situations. It often develops for understandable reasons and it can be an appropriate response to the circumstances we may find ourselves in. Difficult relationships, ongoing stress, periods of uncertainty and change. Some people find that anxiety is connected to earlier difficult experiences. When it is intense, anxiety can feel exhausting and relentless. You might find your thoughts racing late at night, your body constantly on edge, or a persistent sense that something isn’t quite right. Perhaps you’re managing work, relationships and daily responsibilities on the outside, while inside you feel overwhelmed, tense or stuck in cycles of worry.

At times, anxiety can show up as panic attacks, social anxiety, and/or a fear of losing control. At other times, it may be quieter but no less distressing — a steady undercurrent of self-doubt, overthinking or unease. However it presents itself, living with anxiety can feel isolating.

I offer counselling for anxiety in Wandsworth, South London, providing calm and confidential therapeutic spaces in Tooting and Balham where we can explore what is happening for you. Rather than trying to “fix” or suppress your anxiety, I will work together with you to help you understand how you experience it and how you respond to that. Not only will we explore over time where it may come from, what keeps it going, and what it might be trying to communicate but I also work in a holistic way by developing your awareness of how you experience it in the moment and in your body to provide a more impactful experience.

My approach is collaborative and compassionate. I aim to create a space where you feel heard and understood, without judgement or pressure. As we begin to make sense of your experience, you may find that anxiety becomes less overwhelming and more manageable. Over time, counselling can help you build greater self-awareness, resilience and confidence in responding to difficult thoughts and feelings.

How Counselling Can Help with Anxiety

In counselling, I work with my clients to create space to slow things down and develop your awareness of what you are experiencing. Rather than pushing anxiety away or judging yourself for feeling it, we begin by exploring it with curiosity and care. Together, we can look at the patterns of thought, emotional triggers and underlying experiences that may be contributing to your anxiety.

Over time, this process can help you recognise what fuels anxious responses — whether that is self-criticism, fear of rejection, perfectionism, or a sense of not feeling safe. As awareness grows, new choices often become possible. You may begin to respond to anxious thoughts by experimenting with different responses which can help cultivate greater steadiness, develop clearer boundaries, and you feeling more able to express your needs.

The model of counselling I practice, Gestalt Therapy, can also support you in reconnecting with parts of yourself that may feel overshadowed by worry or fear. Therapy is not about eliminating anxiety completely, but about reducing its intensity and learning how to live alongside it in a way that feels more manageable and less controlling.

The pace of our work will be guided by you. My aim is to offer a consistent and supportive therapeutic relationship where you can speak openly, reflect honestly, and gradually build a stronger sense of resilience and self-trust. Anxiety Counselling in Balham, Tooting and online

I offer counselling and therapy for anxiety from quiet and private practice spaces in Balham and Tooting, South London. The practice is easily accessible from surrounding areas including Wandsworth, Earlsfield, Clapham, Streatham and Battersea, and is well connected by public transport.

Many people seek counselling when anxiety begins to affect everyday life — whether that is work, social life and relationships, sleep, or a general sense of wellbeing. Living in a busy city like London can sometimes intensify feelings of pressure, stress or isolation, even when life appears outwardly stable.

For some clients, attending counselling locally can make it easier to integrate therapy into their routine. Having a regular space nearby where you can pause, reflect and talk openly can offer an important sense of continuity and support.

Alongside in-person sessions in Balham and Tooting, I also offer online counselling for those who may prefer the flexibility and comfort of meeting remotely or who are based elsewhere in or outside London.

If you are looking for anxiety counselling or therapy in Wandsworth, South London and would like to explore whether it might be helpful for you, please get in touch to arrange a free initial conversation.
